Yael Rasooly is a renowned visual theatre director, actress, singer and puppeteer, with unique creations that have have been performed all over the world. Her distinct theatrical language is based on a multidisciplinary approach, where all stage elements are equal partners in telling the story.
The relationship between the object/material/puppet and the performer is at the heart of her work, as well as directing through design, sound and music.
At FIMFA Lx - International Festival of Puppetry and Animated Forms was presented Paper Cut, The House by the Lake, but also her wonderful concerts in São Luiz Teatro Municipal.
In this workshop, Yael Rasooly invites the participants on a creative journey into the universe of Object Theatre

Participants in this workshop will be invited to embark on an intense creative and personal journey.
Each artist will be encouraged and guided to develop the beginning sketch of their own short-form, connecting to the themes/stories/materials that hold a special significance and motivation. Tapping into this source of inspiration and impulse together will be our point of departure and from there each artist will dive into creating their own unique form of theatrical expression and storytelling.
"At the heart of our work will be the relationship of the performer/puppeteer with the object or puppet. We will be challenging this relationship, questioning its meaning, stretching its limits. Examining how this dynamic can lead the dramaturgy forward, echo multiple layers of thought and consciousness, and express precise emotion, all with minimalistic resources at hand.
We will begin by exploring objects and materials, developing sensitivity to the weight and meaning of objects, objects that contain memory, and those that are emotionally/socially/politically/historically/ charged. We will investigate the process of bringing to life the inanimate object through extremely different methods of manipulation, while at the same time revealing the character who inhibits each universe through precision of gesture, rhythm, repetition, shifts, focus point, energy level, breaking point, and metamorphosis."
Special attention will be given to the voice - in speaking but mostly in singing. You will explore the powerful potential of combining the singing voice with manipulation of an object/ puppet, the secrets, and complexity that this can expose.
This workshop is an invitation to take a leap into a new chapter of your relationship with your own creation, your ability to dream, and to dare. To face together the familiar challenges of working on a solo show by putting to practice new tools in a safe and encouraging environment. This entails letting go of inner pressures and critics that no longer serve us in the creative process, such as the need to produce “successful” results. Instead, to actively accept that “getting lost” in the “unknown” is an invaluable and indispensable part of the creation process.
Our mission is to be open and receptive to the gems at our fingertips, that we collect and connect together in making an image, a scene, a performance.
"Above all this workshop together is a time for playing. We will be dancing, singing, writing, directing, designing, drawing, manipulating, and performing. We will be taking risks, failing, failing again, improvising, supporting each other to go beyond our perceived limitations, working quickly and intuitively while insisting on pleasure in the rehearsal space. In short, nothing less than an individual revolution, small or huge, towards a new voice that is ready to emerge."
BIO
Yael Rasooly is a visual theater director, actress, singer and puppeteer.
Born in Jerusalem in 1983, she trained as a classical pianist and singer and continued her studies in theater design at Central Saint Martins in London. Her distinct theatrical language, which she began developing at the School of Visual Theatre in Jerusalem, is based on a multidisciplinary approach, where all stage elements are equal partners in telling the story.
The relationship between the object/material/puppet and the performer is at the heart of work, as well as directing through design, sound and music. Her visual universe brings to life voices which lie beneath the surface, inviting her audiences on a journey to the silenced narratives of society.
Her shows, include - Paper Cut award winning solo performance, presented at FIMFA Lx12; The House by the Lake - musical cabaret for actresses, dolls and objects depicting three sisters in hiding during WWII, presented at FIMFA Lx16; Bon Voyage - Coproduction with the FFestival Mondial des Théâtres de Marionnettes de Charleville-Mézières. Her most recent show, Silence Makes Perfect, premiered at Charleville Festival 2021 and is the second chapter of her ongoing trilogy, shedding light on violence towards woman and children.
Yael’s shows have been performed in hundreds of festivals and venues in over 30 countries. Numerous International awards include Grand Prix International Festival of Solo puppeteers (Lodz) Excellence award for solo performance NYC Fringe Festival and Diploma of Excellence from UNIMA.
She has received critical praise and top stars from publications as Telerama, The Guardian and the NY TIMES.
Following her growing passion for teaching and sharing her experience and creative approach, Yael is a guest professor at numerous Institutions and gives master classes around the globe. Her teaching method, combining directing, object theater, puppetry, and vocal technique, is focused on encouraging and empowering individual and personal creation.
She has been invited to teach in institutions such as: Trinity College, University of Connecticut, The Eugene O’Neill Theatre Centre, New York University, Atlanta Centre for Puppetry Arts, UQAM University, Nuku Theatre Tallinn, UQAM Montreal, Institut International de la Marionnette de Cherleville-Mézièrs, Aria en Corse - Association des Rencontres Internationales Artistiques, Théâtre Odradek, FIAMS Québec, Academy of Theatre Arts in Wrocław, and many others.
The participants should bring:
-Movement-clothes for warm-up exercises.
-Objects/materials (it will be later indicated).
